It’s a shame that most other PS5 games don’t even come close to utilizing these features to their full potential. The new game, simply called Astro Bot and developed (like the others) by Team Asobi, kicks off when a group of robots’ PS5 mothership is attacked, scattering the robots throughout the galaxy. Your job as Astro is to go around to all the planets and collect your friends. The games have lots of fun platforming to execute, with grappling hooks and hover-jumps and all kinds of fun things. There are also plenty of alien and robotic enemies and bosses to take on. But that’s not the only way Astro Bot celebrates history, as that idea is also directly tied to the game’s collectibles.
Astro Bot Planet Walkthroughs
Many of the bots — 173 of them, to be precise — are dressed as characters from PlayStation games past and present. They’re digital collectible figures, Funko Pop alternatives for 30 years of PlayStation gaming, celebrating almost every Sony property you can think of. Naturally, you’ll find Ratchet and Clank, Kratos, and Nathan Drake here; third-party heroes with a PlayStation connection, like Metal Gear Solid’s Snake and Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, are also represented. Whether for licensing reasons or just to make a fun guessing game, the bots are given coy names like Dad of Boy (Kratos), Spinning Marsupial (Crash Bandicoot), and Immune Survivor (The Last of Us’ Ellie). There are some deep cuts that will have all but the most encyclopedic of PlayStation fans scratching their heads.
Previous Astro Bot games have been employed to showcase new bits of kit. It feels like Sony is trying to channel its whole spirit into this game. gg88 is a glimpse of what Sony wants you to understand that it believes that it is.

One of the biggest announcements during last week’s PlayStation State of Play livestream was Astro Bot, the full-fledged sequel to the excellent Astro’s Playroom that comes preinstalled on PS5. Just like Astro’s Playroom, Astro Bot is a 3D puzzle-platformer that pays homage to PlayStation history and makes heavy use of the PS5 DualSense controller’s many unique features like haptic feedback and dynamic triggers. However, this time, we’re getting a full-length game (with no microtransactions) that’s much bigger than Astro’s previous adventures.
You will encounter your first Rescued Bot on Sky Garden, near the very start of the level. There is one Puzzle Piece that floats in space in the Gorilla Nebula once you’ve beaten all levels through Apes On The Loose. The second puzzle piece can’t be reached until after you break the first blue hourglass, drain it of liquid, and then pop the cork. From that platform, turn left and kill the green blob sitting under the platform. Use it in conjunction with your rocket ability to reach the top of the platform where you fought the slime. Proceed through the level from bot #1, taking the spiral platform, defeating the snake, and continuing your climb.
While fairly uncomplicated, this narrative table-setting serves as an effective foundation for the adventure to come, as Astro visits various unique and exciting planets across several solar systems. However, Astro Bot elevates itself from its two predecessors, proving once and for all that PlayStation’s relatively new platforming series deserves to be mentioned among the greats of the genre. After acquiring the balloon power-up, backtrack to the previous platform and float to the opposite side. In the beginning of the stage, immediately knock out the ladybug and use it as a trampoline to get onto the pillar to the left, the puzzle piece will be found here. After getting the balloon power up from the huge robot, immediately use it to get to the robot’s head to find the hidden bot.
Players can also watch the video at the top of the page to see their animations and Gatcha Lab items. Simply put, this feature makes collecting all bots and other secrets in the game trivially easy. It’s a lovely idea, and we hope it finds its way into other games that could use it similarly in years to come. They also give the devs more freedom and ability to get creative – and just as importantly, lets us players take our time and enjoy every little detail. Many of us with backlogs probably don’t feel it that’s the thing.

Vibrant colors make me feel like I’m in a cartoon, but Team Asobi doesn’t flatten its environments or skimp on detail. In one level, I start by walking across swaths of bright green foliage. I feel the crunch of the grass between my metal feet and hear the sound from my DualSense’s speakers. Then I move on to a metallic checkerboard floor, where I hear my legs lightly click-clacking on the tiles. At some point during your playthrough, I recommend muting your TV and leaving your controller audio on.
Astro Bot is a showcase for the DualSense’s bells and whistles unlike anything since, well… Triggers tighten in your fingers and rumbles are sent through your thumbs. I found my whole body involuntarily drifting from side to side as I guided Astro’s ship with the motion controls. I’d also recommend turning your controller speaker volume up if, like me, you have it muted by default – you’ll be missing out on some fantastic audio flourishes otherwise. And while there’s nothing to quite rival the GPU earworm of four years ago (despite the best efforts of a giant singing tree), the music is a consistent delight throughout. If you watch long enough, you’ll see that one of them is actually a generic bot. Just before you lift the massive bridge out of the ground, you’ll find some moving metal boxes in the poison lake to the right. Cross them (destroying them as you go) and then boost up when you reach the final platform. You’ll reach another PlayStation bot hanging in the mouth of a gold snake statue. You must complete the Great Master Challenge in order to find and collect Chop Chop Master Onion Special Bot.

There isn’t anywhere else to spend Coin and you’ll always pay 100, no matter what. As long as you have more than that, you can buy from the machine. Plus, you’ll make a ton going to new and even older levels from exploring, destroying enemies, and collecting coins and old character and Puzzle Pieces. In tandem with expert level design are the game’s diverse and exciting mechanics.
Across the game’s dozens of levels, you’ll see many abilities like these, and in nearly every case, they are a resounding success. There is both depth and breadth to most levels, and frequent checkpoints mean you’ll rarely be punished for exploration or missing a jump. Levels take only five to 10 minutes in most cases, but are overflowing with personality. Robot animals climb trees along the periphery or jump out of the ocean far beneath the levitating worlds you explore. Everything constantly moves around you, imbuing every level with life beyond the scraps you’ll engage in with the game’s enemies. Each level’s theme is brought to life with aesthetic assets and design ideas that strengthen their themes.
On the flip side, this leads to a nitpick regarding the enemies. Besides the bosses, none of the enemies have names or identities. This robs the enemies of the kind of simple but memorable personalities that even the most generic Bots have. Nebulas is the main antagonist of the series, a space bully who loves causing trouble for Astro and his friends. He’s a green-skinned alien with a massive mouth, always looking for ways to make life difficult for the crew. You’ll dash, swing, and rocket-punch through diverse areas like volcanoes and jungles, unlocking 15 new abilities, including using Barkster, the Bulldog Booster, to air-dash and smash enemies.
